Michael S Matthews, OD, graduated from the School of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley. Senior Optometrist at Oasis Optometry in San Francisco and Alameda Eyes Optometry in Alameda, California. Dr. Matthews sold both practices and retired to Mazatlan, Mexico. Dr. Matthews has been a volunteer staff optometrist for the Hospital del La Familia in Guatemala since 1991. He retired as a Lt. Commander from the United States Coast Guard Reserve where he served primarily in Search & Rescue in the San Francisco Bay out of Yerba Buena Island. Dr. Matthews enjoys dancing Argentinean Tango with his wife Ivy. Opting to come out of retirement, Dr. Matthews moved to San Diego and assumed ownership of Midway Optometry in Point Loma. Bringing his many years of experience to Midway Optometry, Dr. Matthews takes pride in his ability to bring you the best in eye care.

The entire experience from the moment you walk in the door until you leave is wonderful; entire staff is professional and friendly, and Dr. Matthews knows his stuff and has a lovely personality. I had such an amazing experience...I am so glad my friend recommended me. I am now paying it forward and referring all of my friends to this office. The staff is great and Dr. Matthew's is very patient which made my visit excellent.

All around expert care. Dr. Matthews and the staff are focused on getting you the care and information you need. He has intentionally set up this practice to be his ideal setting. You will not feel like another customer being rushed in and out. I could not recommend him more.

Dr Matthews is very detail and thorough. I am very happy and would not want to go any where else. Great Staff and Great comfortable office with designer frames to choose from too! A very nice experience. I feel lucky to have found him.

Dr. Matthews & his team are wonderful! I appreciate how through Dr. Matthews is and he always shares something that you can learn about regarding vision / eye care. His team is awesome and very helpful in expediting the orders and appointments. Hands down the most friendly eye doctor / team in San Diego!

I brought my 11 yr old daughter to see Dr. Matthews after our past eye doc tried to say she had a muscle problem and then referred us to a very expensive specialist - which happened to be her friend. Right. Dr, Matthews was very caring, thorough and patient with my daughter. His manner is very kind and she felt comfortable with him doing the exam. The ladies up front were also very kind, caring and welcoming. All in all, it was a great visit and my daughter got exactly what she needs to be able to read books comfortably again. Looks like I found my new family optometrist!

Dr. Matthews is the best ophthalmologist hands down. Everything from friendly, compassionate staff to the great atmosphere, great selection & high tech equipment. All of that topped only by Dr. Matthews finding the best solution to my visual concerns. I'll never go anywhere else. Dr. Matthews is phenomenal! He took the time to get to know me and my eyes and went above and beyond in our consultation, answered all manner of questions, and was very personable to boot! What a great experience. But the experience began before meeting the doctor, when Stephanie at the front desk checked me in, walked me through all the tests and results, and the post-exam review of frames, lenses, etc. True customer service by all parties involved.

I've been going to Dr Matthews for a couple of years now, and he continues to be an awesome eye Doctor! His staff is great, his new eye exam machines are top of the line and Dr Mathews is always pleasant and knowledgable.

Dr. Matthews is great! He is very attentive and takes his time answering all my questions. His office staff is wonderful too. They are always friendly and helpful. I used to go to the doctor who had the practice before and was disappointed when I found out she had sold her practice. However, when I got to know Dr. Matthews, I was so happy to make the change to a new doctor.

Great staff, great doctor. I don't go because I have serious eye issues, I go because I'm getting old and need to screen for age related issues. No hard sell, just a thorough, kind exam.

I was very impressed with Dr. Matthews' extensive knowledge of eye health as well as current research and research gaps. The staff is lovely and I was very impressed with high-tech testing equipment they have.

I have been going to Dr. Matthews for a few years now. He took over for the previous doctor which was not as capable. Always easy to get an appointment, informs you of test results and most importantly, listens to me. On top of that, they help me pick out frames that are perfect for me(I am not good at it and have little patience). Will continue to see Dr. Matthews in the future!

I needed a specific type of color vision test performed in order to complete a job application, I called around to multiple places and no one had the equipment to perform it except Dr. Matthews. The staff and Dr. Matthews were all very helpful and accommodating, the application was time sensitive so I was able to get an appointment the same day I called; actually within hours. Dr. Matthews took the time to explain what made the specific test I was taking different from the standard test, and he also showed my additional tests and what they meant. After I was done he then let me try different glasses specially designed to help with color vision. I had read about these before, but never had the chance to try them, and it was a very interesting experience. Overall everything thing went just as well as I could have hoped. I got exactly what I needed and everyone was very kind, helpful, and professional.

Dr. Matthews and staff was very professional and welcoming. He came highly recommended to me from a friend. I have since recommended him to my co-workers/friends. Dr. Matthews and his nurse took their time to explain to me what each test was for and the results on top of the anatomy of the eye and what to look out for. He was very thorough and informative. I would highly recommend Dr. Matthews and his team if your looking for an eye doctor. Also, his office has plenty of parking and convenient to get to. Great location.

Dr. Matthews is a wonderful optometrist. He took the time to explain the anatomy of my eye during my exam helping me to understand exactly how my prescription corrects the natural misshape of my eyes. I was most impressed by the follow up help I received from him and his staff. After filling my prescription, which ended up being far different from the previous prescription I had (because my former doctor had giving me a prescription too strong for my eyes causing me headaches), I had a hard time seeing through my new glasses. He brought me in for a follow up to check my new glasses to be sure they were made correctly, as well as double check the prescription was what I needed to see clearly. Turns out I just needed time to adjust. I was so grateful they took the time to help me feel at ease with my glasses. He even said if at any point I am uncomfortable with my glasses, he will adjust the prescription in my lenses free of charge! The whole staff was so kind and extremely friendly. I look forward to continue visiting their office for future exams. I highly recommend anyone come visit Midway Optometry for their visions needs!

Simply and excellent Optometry office. They use the latest equipment to get the highest quality results and the staff are exceptional at communicating the results. Dr Matthews couldn't be better either. He is up on the state of the art! I very highly recommend them.

The staff at Midway Optometry was very professional. Dr. Matthews took the time to explain the results from all the tests done and didn't rush me out of the office. I was very surprised with the amount of knowledge I gained which was glossed over by my previous optometrist. I am very happy with the care I received and the options I was given. I can't recommend Dr.Matthews enough.

Dr. Matthews was very professional and personable. He is ready to answer questions and really goes out of his way to educate his clients. Facility was clean and staff were friendly and didn't rush me to pick out glasses. Prices seemed reasonable as they offer a fairly decent selection of glasses. Would definitely recommend this office.
